Microsoft Surface sales underwhelm, in an believed 1.5 million units
Microsoft’s Surface RT and Surface Pro haven’t made a dent within the tablet market, based on unofficial sales estimates.
To date, Microsoft has offered roughly 1.5 million Surface devices, Bloomberg reports, citing three unnamed sources “with understanding from the company’s sales.” The split in sales is apparently greater than a million units for that Surface RT contributing to 400,000 units for that Surface Pro.
If accurate, individuals sales figures miss some analysts’ estimates, and perhaps Microsoft’s own estimates. Microsoft had apparently purchased 3 million Surface RT tablets, Bloomberg’s sources stated, and UBS analyst Brent Thrill had forecasted Microsoft would sell two million of these within the December quarter alone. Other analysts forecast lower sales, with Detwiler Fenton expecting RT sales to top out at 600,000 within the 4th quarter.
Microsoft has downplayed the requirement for strong Surface sales, and also the company’s own expectations don’t appear up to individuals of industry analysts. Last This summer, prior to the launch of Home windows 8, Microsoft Chief executive officer Steve Ballmer stated the organization “may sell a couple of million” Surface tablets within the product’s first 12 several weeks. Unless of course sales get from now until This summer, it’s unlikely that Microsoft will hit that mark, however it could compare.
In almost any situation, Microsoft has stressed that Surface is much more about setting a good example for PC makers than about dominating sales. “I am super-glad we did Surface,” Ballmer told Durch Technology Review recently. “It is essential–and not simply for Microsoft as well as the entire Home windows ecosystem–to determine integrated software and hardware.”
The issue, then, is whether or not PC makers will feel compelled to experience along and launch more interesting Home windows 8 tablets and hybrids. It’s difficult to determine that occuring as the likes of Samsung and Acer openly voice their dissatisfaction with Home windows 8 sales, so that as they appear with other options like Android and Chrome OS. Rather, they might be attracted by lower licensing costs, which could cause a glut of low-priced touchscreen Home windows 8 devices–far in the clever, high-finish style of the top.
